Peter Lawlor Calls for more Doctors for QLD

Peter Lawlor the member for Southport has called on the Howard government to provide more university places for the training of doctors in Queensland.

"In the last thirty years Queensland's population has almost doubled to around 4 million. However, over that time, successive Federal governments have failed to adequately provide for doctor training places in Queensland" Mr Lawlor said.

Mr Lawlor said that the advice taken by successive federal governments from the medical lobby and the Howard Government's decision to limit medical places has resulted in a chronic shortage of doctors in Queensland.

Mr Lawlor is seeking the support from the community for his campaign to lobby the Howard Liberal Government to allocate a greater number of doctor training places to Queensland.

"Regardless of the origins of the problem, we now need to put politics aside and address the doctor shortage in Queensland.

"We can't do this over a long period of time. We need to act now to fix this shortage."he said.

"The State Government has been working rapidly to develop immediate solutions to address shortages and blockages in the health system.

"The State Government recognises the strain the doctor shortage has placed on the Queensland Health System. The Beattie Government will provide $60 million for the funding of 235 new doctor training places at Griffith University" he said.

"The Commonwealth needs to accept its share of the responsibility, and after all, the Commonwealth controls university medical places - they could do this tomorrow if they were committed to helping fix our doctor shortage."

Mr Lawlor is gathering support for a petition calling on the Howard Government to play its part in making a similar commitment to increase the number of university places for the training of doctors in Queensland.

"I am asking for the community to support my petition. We need to pressure the Howard Government to make a more appropriate commitment to the provision of doctor training places in Queensland.

Copies of the Petitions are available from my Southport electorate office. Constituents can call into the office which is situated at 24 Musgrave Ave, Chirn Park or by calling directly on (07) 5532 5068.
