Question on Notice No. 777 Asked on Tuesday 23 May 2006
MR LAWLOR ASKED THE MINISTER FOR POLICE AND CORRECTIVE SERVICES (MS SPENCE) -
QUESTION:
How do police numbers today on the Gold Coast compare with police numbers when the National-Liberal coalition was last in Government in 1998?
ANSWER:
As at 1 May 2006, the Gold Coast District had an approved staffing strength of 689 police officer positions. In addition to this, a further 9 positions have been allocated from future growth to support the creation of Police Beats at Pacific Pines, Biggera Waters and Arundel and to support increased Juvenile Aid Bureau activities. As at 1 July 1998, only 503 police positions were allocated to the Gold Coast District. The current allocation represents a 39% increase in police numbers since the Beattie Government was first elected. This clearly demonstrates a significant commitment to the community through increased police. This Government recognises that the Gold Coast District is one of the fastest growing areas in the State, and it will continue to experience significant population growth well into the future. The Beattie Government is committed to providing community infrastructure necessary to support this growth. The three new police beats to be opened at Pacific Pines, Biggera Waters and Arundel are testament to this commitment as well as the new Police District for the Northern Gold Coast.
