Queensland Multicultural Festival receives funding boost

The Beattie Government has increased its commitment to this year's Queensland Multicultural Festival, to be held on Sunday October 2 and Monday October 3 at Roma Street Parkland.

Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor today said the government was investing $672,000 in the festival and associated Premier's Multicultural Photographic Awards, a more than 60 percent increase on last year's funding.

"The increase reflects our commitment as a government to promoting the benefits of having an inclusive and welcoming society in Queensland," Mr Lawlor said.

"Last year's inaugural festival and photographic awards captured the imagination and support of Queenslanders and will now be annual events.

"More than 30,000 people attended the festival in 2004 and 251 entries were received in the photographic awards.

"The festival featured more than 400 performers from 30 countries, as well as 25 international food stalls."

Mr Lawlor said this year the festival was expanding to take up the entire Parkland on Sunday 2 October, with additional stages, food stalls, amenities and roving performers.

"A schools program on Monday 3 October will offer students in grades 5 to 7 the chance to spend a day attending workshops and performances by a range of ethnic and Indigenous artists," he said.

Mr Lawlor said the increased funding for the festival and photographic awards complemented the government's election commitment funding boost to the Multicultural Assistance Program (MAP).

"A three-year, $3 million increase to this program has resulted in 13 new community workers being employed to support cultural diversity and a significant increase in the funding available for multicultural community festivals, events and projects around the state," he said.

"Queensland has an excellent reputation as a place in which to invest and do business - trade, tourism, investment and jobs growth are all enhanced by multiculturalism."

More information on the festival, schools program and photographic awards, as well as application forms for the festival, is available at www.multiculturalfestival.qld.gov.au.
