Traditional owners John Mc Donald - QRL Chairman Ross Livermore Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen
I am very pleased to represent the Queensland Government here at the Queensland Rugby League Southern Queensland Administrators Conference.
This event will help administrators improve their skills and knowledge of the way they run their clubs and ensure that rugby league remains strong for the future.
It will also recognise the selfless and dedicated contributions of the countless administrators and volunteers who are involved in the sport, as well as the positive impact rugby league clubs have on many communities throughout Queensland.
Rugby League
As the peak organisation representing the sport of rugby league in our state, the QRL oversees six divisions, comprising 208 junior clubs, 38,000 registered junior players in 2286 teams and more than 14,000 registered senior players.
As you would all know, rugby league in Queensland is booming. We boast the State of Origin trophy and the current NRL premiers, the Brisbane Broncos. Not only is the Australian captain a Queenslander, but if you take out Mark Gasnier, so is the whole Australian backline. And of course this year marks the debut of Queensland's third NRL team, the Gold Coast Titans. It certainly is a good time to be living north of the Tweed.
We would not be enjoying this period of success without the solid foundation of those who administer the game at the grassroots level.
This conference has become an important event on the rugby league calendar for club administrators, and consistently points the way towards improvement in the way we rung the game in Queensland.
The conference this year will focus on four main areas -Contemporary Club Administration, Providing Safe Environments, Topical Issues Facing Rugby League Development, and Leaguenet and New Technology.
The Club Administration sessions will include topics such as fundraising, insurance and liability, creating a media profile and applying for grants. These sessions are a real opportunity for club administrators to improve their skills and knowledge.
Sessions on Providing Safe Environments will include managing Blue Card requirements, risk management, preventing fraud and how a club can manage water restrictions.
The Topical Issues sessions are always interesting, and address subjects such as community development, the role of women in the game and issues specified to junior and senior football.
And finally, the sessions on Leaguenet will showcase new ways of promoting the game, and creating a real sense of community among clubs. Leaguenet offers free websites to all junior clubs, software that allows clubs to do their season draw and points tables, and helps kids to find their local footy club.
I encourage you to take in as many of the sessions as you can, but don't forget to take a minute to meet your peers. This is a perfect opportunity to share your skills and experiences with the league community.
Rugby league is a fantastic participation sport for young Queenslanders. It offers an opportunity to get out in the fresh air and get active.
It is also a very social sport, and I think it's fair to say that countless friendships have been forged on and around Queensland's footy fields over the years.
League clubs also serve as important community meeting places where people can come together to watch a game, relax and socialise.
Government Commitment
As well as being an exciting and enjoyable sport to participate in and watch, rugby league is a great way for people, especially youngsters, to get active.
The Queensland Government is strongly committed to promoting healthy, active lifestyles for all Queenslanders and rugby league can play an important part in encouraging people to get more involved in sport and active recreation.
Obesity is a big issue in Australia at the moment. Surveys indicate more than half the adult population and almost one quarter of our children are seriously overweight.
This is an alarming statistic, and one that the Government is very serious about addressing.
We want to encourage people to develop a passion for physical activity from a young age so that they can carry it through into their adult life.
Rugby League is a great way to foster this passion, and the Beattie Government has recognised this by providing more than $44 million since 1998 to support the growth of the sport.
We look forward to working with the Queensland Rugby League to further support the development of the sport across the state in the future.
Closing
I would like to thank the Queensland Rugby League once again for the invitation to join you here today.
It is important to recognise the efforts of the administrators and volunteers who contribute so much to the success of our rugby league clubs, but it is also vital that we constantly improve our skills and knowledge in order to grow the game.
If we can keep improving the way we run our clubs, it will make it easier to identify the stars of tomorrow. The next Darren Lockyer may be running around in the under 10's at your local footy club. If we can help these kids achieve their potential, they may well be the ones breaking Blue hearts with a winning try at the death. I welcome everyone attending the conference over the next two days and hope you all take some new ideas back to your clubs to ensure the growth and prosperity of Rugby League football - the greatest game of all.
