MR LAWLOR asked the Minister for Primary Industries and Fisheries (MR MULHERIN)-
QUESTION:
Will he advise what initiatives the department has put in place to assist the Queensland pig industry?
ANSWER:
The Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries (DPI&F) is committed to profitable primary industries in Queensland. The pig industry is an important part of Queensland's primary industries and employs over 6 000 people directly and indirectly. DPI&F supports the pig industry through research, extension and skills development initiatives primarily aimed at improving business production efficiency. The following are some of the current initiatives:
• initiatives to develop a more reliable and suitable supply of grain regardless of the end use (food, feed and fuel). For example, crop improvement programs focused on increasing the yield and quality of range of field crops such as sorghum, maize, barley and wheat, which are suitable for Queensland's climate.
• research and consultancy support to the pig industry primarily aimed at improving business production efficiency including: - nutrition consultancy service, providing least cost feed formulation service to the pig industry; - research of technologies such as the use of feed enzymes, that can improve feed efficiency and thereby reduce the cost of production; - collaborative research with the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research to identify other local ingredients that can be used in commercial pig feed; - 'measure to manage' workshops in conjunction with Australian Pork Limited to improve record keeping and risk management of individual producers; and - e-Piggery and Prime pulse, decision support programs that monitor production performance and optimise business performance of piggeries.
• Skills development programs to the pig industry through FarmBis and Skills Telegraph. DPI&F will continue to support the pig industry in its quest for profitability and sustainability. Last changed: [PUBLISHED_DATE] at 9:28 AM
