MR LAWLOR asked the Minister for Communities, Disability Services and Seniors (MR PITT) - QUESTION: Will he give some examples of support options delivered through the Innovative Funding - Community Iniatives Program as cited on page 2-18 of the Ministerial Portfolio Statements?
ANSWER: The Innovative Funding - Community Initiatives grant program commenced in 2003-04 as part of Future Directions for Disability Services. The program aims to fund innovative and flexible support options for people with a disability which foster the development of community capacity in meeting their needs. $1.4M in recurrent funding was allocated for this program in 2003-04.
143 applications totalling $13.2M were received. A rigorous assessment and prioritisation process was undertaken in October - November 2003.
Funds were allocated to 20 community-based organisations in total - 15 of which operate within a specific locality or region and five of which provide a statewide service.
Some examples of initiatives funded under this program in 2003-04 include:
· Karakan Inc in South Coast Region was funded to provide support and short-term accommodation for individuals with a psychiatric disability and dual diagnosis.
· Brain Injury Association of Queensland Inc was funded for a statewide project to establish a Behavioural Intervention and Mentoring Service for service providers and families with individuals with acquired brain injury displaying challenging behaviours.
· Community Living Association Inc in Brisbane Region was funded to establish a model of service to support chronically marginalised young people with a disability.
· Centacare in Brisbane Region was funded to establish a program to support individuals with an intellectual disability or an acquired brain injury to become volunteers with community and other organisations.
· Choice Support Service Inc in North Coast Region was funded to establish a community-based support program for people with a psychiatric disability.
· Lifeline Community Care in Ipswich/South West Queensland Region was funded to provide regular integrated respite and socialisation for children and young people with a disability.
· St John's Community Care Ltd in North Queensland Region was funded to provide support services for individuals with a dual diagnosis.
Over the next three years, evaluation of each initiative will be undertaken by the funded service in collaboration with Disability Services Queensland to facilitate the promulgation of learnings, good practice examples and new support approaches resulting from innovative projects.
The Government has provided a further $1.0M for Innovative Funding in 2004-05. This is made up of $0.5M from Future Directions for Disability Services and an additional $0.5M provided as a 2004 Election Commitment. Last changed: [PUBLISHED_DATE] at 12:00 AM
