MR LAWLOR asked the Minister for Natural Resources and Mines (MR ROBERTSON)- With reference to page 11 of the Ministerial Portfolio Statement which refers to a film competition being run by the department to raise public awareness about the sustainable management and use of water- What has been the level of public interest in this film competition?
ANSWER: The Liquid Lens-Short Film Awards is an initiative that captures the community's interest in films and uses this to promote the importance of water for Queensland. The competition is open to Queensland secondary schools, tertiary students and new filmmakers. The Awards has four categories to ensure that all filmmakers are able to compete fairly with their peers for prizes. The categories are, films made by Queensland Secondary Schools, films made by tertiary students, an Open Category for films made by new and professional filmmakers and a Community Service Announcement category for a 30 second television commercial which, subject to negotiation with Channel 9, will be aired in Brisbane, during the week of Riverfestival in September 2005.
The film competition has attracted a lot of community interest particularly amongst the filmmakers and the education sectors in Queensland. The department's web page promoting the competition received 1482 views. Moreover 304 registrations of interest were received.
The registrations of interest transpired into 61 entries. There are 9 entires from Queensland secondary schools. The schools that entered the competition were the Lockyer District High School at Gatton, the A B Patterson College at Sanctuary Cove, the Bundaberg High School, Sheldon College at Capalaba, St Peter's Lutheran College at Kenmore, two entries from Cannon Hill Anglican College at Tingalpa, St Saviour's College at Toowoomba and Dakabin State High School.
9 entries have been received in the Tertiary Category. Entries were received from students at Gold Coast TAFE, the University of Queensland, QUT, The University of the Sunshine Coast, The University of Southern Queensland, Tropical North Queensland TAFE, and Griffith University.
There are 20 entrants for the Open Category with most entries coming from Queensland filmmakers but also from filmmakers in Western Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and New South Wales.
In the Community Service Announcement Category there are 23 entries from throughout Queensland. There are entries from Cairns, Townsville, Flying Fish Point near Innisfail, the Gold Coast, Buderim and a variety of Brisbane suburbs. There were also entries in this category from the Northern Territory, Victoria and New South Wales.
The winning films in each category will be announced at a special event that will be run on 6 September 2005 as part of the 2005 Brisbane Riverfestival. Riverfestival is one of Queensland's major cultural events and the Liquid Lens Film Awards is a major event in the Riverfestival program. There will also be screenings of the winning films as well as the finalists at the Brisbane Convention Centre and in the Queen Street Mall during Riverfestival. The award event and the screening of the films during Riverfestival will further enhance community appreciation of the importance of water to the future and the lifestyles of Queensland's communities.
The staff of Riverfestival, who are administrating the film competition on behalf of the department, have advised that community interest and film industry support for the competition has been excellent. Major identities such as Kate Woods, one of Australia's leading film directors, are participating in the film awards. The film industry, Queensland schools and tertiary institutes see the Liquid Lens Film Awards as an opportunity to highlight to the community the issues and the importance of water.
