MR LAWLOR asked the Minister for Primary Industries and Fisheries (MR PALASZCZUK) -

QUESTION:

With reference to page 1-4 of the Ministerial Portfolio Statement-

(1) How is the Government supporting the RSPCA upgrade of its shelters across the State?

(2) How much funding has been provided to the RSPCA and on what basis has it been provided?

ANSWER:

(1) The RSPCA's capital works program involves the upgrade of all eight existing animal shelters across Queensland and the establishment of a new shelter in Gympie. This commenced with the Townsville shelter, which had the most urgent requirements.

(2) In 2002-03 the Queensland Government approved a grant of $2.5 million over three years to the RSPCA's infrastructure development program. The total grant is $2.5 million and is matched dollar for dollar with the RSPCA.

A grant of $1.5 million has already been made and has been used to date for Townsville, Noosa, and the mobile desexing clinic. Much of the $1 million to be provided by the State Government in 2004-05 will go towards the new shelter at Gympie.

The Townsville shelter is completed and operational. RSPCA Townsville has probably the best and most practical animal shelter that currently exists in Australia.

Australia's first large-scale pet de-sexing unit has commenced at Noosa. This unit will reduce the number of cats euthanised in Queensland annually. The Government contributed $400,000 of the $2.5million to this project. The clinic will cover the entire Sunshine Coast region and is available for other local councils.

The RSPCA is continuing negotiations with the State Government to relocate its facilities currently on the Fairfield site in Brisbane.

I am advised the relocation of the current shelter on the Gold Coast is still under consideration.

For the new shelter at Gympie, the RSPCA is awaiting approval of plans from the Council before work can commence.

No work has commenced at Bundaberg, Cairns, Kingaroy and Dakabin as these projects are further down the track in the capital works program.
