MR LAWLOR asked the Minister for Small Business, Information Technology Policy and Multicultural Affairs (MR CUMMINS)- Will he advise the details of the Muslim community engagement strategy released by the Premier in the mini-Budget in October?
ANSWER- I thank the Member for his question and would like to congratulate him on his ongoing strong support for multicultural affairs within his electorate.
The mini-Budget announced by the Premier on 25 October 2005 included $700,000 for the implementation of a Muslim Community Engagement Strategy. The purpose of the strategy is to continue to promote positive relations and engagement between the Muslim community and the wider Queensland community.
The strategy comprises:
- media and leadership training for leaders of the Muslim community;
- promotion of interaction and understanding between Muslim and non-Muslim people, particularly young people, and linking young Muslim people to services;
- information for journalists and editors to promote balanced reporting of Muslim community issues; and
- interfaith dialogue.
This will be delivered by funding two Muslim youth workers in community-based organisations as well as appointing a Muslim youth representative to the Youth Advisory Council. Two rounds of small grants will be run to fund community organisations to support local projects and encourage interaction between Muslims and non-Muslims, especially young people. Materials will be published which outline the contribution of Muslim Queenslanders to the life of the state.
There will also be a series of forums on multi-faith dialogue, media issues and leadership. An 'open mosques' program will be run where the Muslim community will be encouraged to invite people into mosques so that people can see for themselves that they are places of worship and community service.
The most important aspect of this strategy is that the Queensland Government will implement it in close partnership with the Muslim community. A reference group from the Muslim community will help guide the Government as it implements the strategy.
This strategy will guard against the marginalisation of Muslim communities. It will provide opportunities for interaction across communities and thereby increase understanding of Islam and Muslim people in general and help to maintain the high level of community harmony for which Queensland is rightly known.Last changed: [PUBLISHED_DATE] at 11:00 PM
