MR LAWLOR asked the Minister for Communities, Disability Services and Seniors (MR PITT)-
What is the role of the Ministerial Advisory Council on Domestic and Family Violence?

ANSWER-
The role of the Ministerial Advisory Council on Domestic and Family Violence is to provide current and timely advice to me and the Queensland Government on issues that relate to the development of policies, programs and services that impact on domestic and family violence issues.

The council consists of an independent Chair, ten regional representatives aligned with the Department of Communities' regions, three Indigenous representatives and six ex-officio government representatives. Regional members are supported by the Department of Communities' regional offices to be regionally active and informed, and subsequently well placed to put forward quality, peer tested advice.

I have asked the council to focus on four main issues:

  • Perpetrator programs;
  • Domestic and family violence legislation;
  • Indigenous family violence; and
  • Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month.
The council meets for a formal one day meeting three times per year and members keep in contact via teleconference and email between meetings. The council also works closely with the Department of Communities' Violence Prevention Team in relation to these issues.

I aim to attend each formal meeting and discuss the workplan and other issues with the council and, at the end of its two year term, the council will provide me with a formal report on the advice provided and activities undertaken throughout the term.

The council provides Queenslanders with the opportunity to influence the way the Queensland Government addresses domestic and family violence. The council's advice about preventing domestic and family violence, and supporting victims, will help shape policies at the local, regional and state level. Thus the council has a crucial role in helping the Queensland Government improve the safety and well being of Queensland families.
