Mr LAWLOR asked the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice (MRS LAVARCH)- What is the purpose of the "JPs in the Community" program?
ANSWER- The "JPs in the Community" program was established initially to provide members of the public with easier access to Justices of the Peace and Commissioners for Declarations.
The program also provides participating Justices of the Peace and Commissioners for Declarations with a safe and community orientated environment to assist members of the public in witnessing documentation.
The program commenced in 2003 at the Westfield Chermside Shoppingtown and has now been introduced to almost fifty other shopping centres, courthouses and libraries throughout Queensland. There are approximately five hundred volunteers who give up their valuable time to participate in the program across the State.
The Queensland Justices Association (QJA) should be acknowledged for establishing several shopping centre signing sites, with their members working closely with my Department's Justices of the Peace Branch to help expand the program.
To provide support to the volunteer Justices of the Peace, and to increase their knowledge of witnessing procedures and practices, training officers from the Justices of the Peace Branch continue to provide regular training.
The Justices of the Peace Branch has also arranged for volunteer Justices of the Peace to be available at the Family Law Court of Australia Registry, the State Law Building and the new Brisbane Magistrates Court Registry on a regular basis to assist persons requiring documents to be witnessed.
One of the benefits of the "JPs in the Community" program is that shopping centres predominately assist volunteers by providing a signing booth. If any Members are interested in expanding the "JP's in the community program" to areas within their own electorate I invite them to contact the Registrar of Justices of the Peace to discuss their proposal.
Shopping centres, courthouses and libraries currently participating in the program include:
