MR LAWLOR asked the Minister for Communities, Disability Services and Seniors (MR PITT)- What are the objectives of the Queensland Youth Council?
ANSWER- The Queensland Youth Council is an advisory council to the Minister for Communities, Disability Services and Seniors. The purpose of the council is to provide a forum for the exchange of information and views between young people and the Queensland government in order to assist the development of policy, programs and services that impact on the lives of Queensland's young people.
The council's objectives are to:
- Provide advice on policy, programs and services which impact on young people, as requested by the Minister for Communities, Disability Services and Seniors;
- Provide advice to the Minister for Communities, Disability Services and Seniors on current and emerging issues and concerns of importance to young people, as identified by the council;
- Provide advice to the Minister for Communities, Disability Services and Seniors on issues impacting on young people specific to local and regional contexts; and
- Support and monitor the development and implementation of Queensland government policy related to young people.
The council consists of 20 young people aged between 15-25 years and one government representative. There are two young people representing each of the Department of Communities' ten regions. Regional members are supported by the Department of Communities' regional offices to be regionally active and informed, and subsequently well placed to put forward quality, peer tested advice.
The council meets for a formal two day meeting twice a year and members keep in contact via teleconference and email between meetings. The council also works closely with the Department of Communities' Office for Youth in relation to these issues.
I aim to attend each formal meeting and discuss the workplan and other issues with the council and, at the end of its two year term, the council will provide me with a formal report on the advice provided and activities undertaken throughout the term.
The council provides Queenslanders with the opportunity to influence the way that the Queensland government's policy, programs and services impact on the lives of Queensland's young people. The council's advice about young people will help shape policies at the local, regional and state level. Thus the council has a crucial role in helping the Queensland government improve the lives and opportunities of Queensland young people.Last changed: [PUBLISHED_DATE] at 11:00 PM
