MR LAWLOR asked the Minister for Police and Corrective Services (MS SPENCE)-
What is the current status regarding the proposed new Southport Police Station?
ANSWER-
Alongside the Beattie Government's commitment to increasing police numbers, the upgrade and construction of new police stations and facilities remains a priority.
The new Southport Police Station is a significant project for the Beattie Government and a commitment was given during the election to accelerate work this station.
Last year, I announced plans for the replacement of the Southport Police Station, which will be a state-of-the-art facility. The station will provide the full range of functions of a 24-hour police station. The new station will meet the operational needs of police as well as the growing Gold Coast community. The replacement station will be a two storey building adjacent to the existing station, with the capacity to accommodate more than 100 officers.
The Department of Public Works have been engaged to design the new facility and have advised that early works packages have been called for removal of the fuel tank and carport from the new station site. Tenders for these early works have closed and are currently being reviewed by Project Services.
Tenders for the replacement station are expected to be called in April 2005 and if an acceptable offer is received, then construction is expected to commence in late May 2005. Last changed: [PUBLISHED_DATE] at 11:00 PM
