MR LAWLOR asked the Minister for Communities, Disability Services and Seniors (MR PITT)- With reference to page 2-33 of the Ministerial Portfolio Statement which refers to training under Corporate Services-What training is available to Disability Services Queensland staff and how many staff members have accessed training?
ANSWER- Residential Care Officers undertake a four-week induction, which has been designed specifically around the requirements of their job. New employees also work with an experienced staff member prior to being able to work independently. During their first year of employment Residential Care Officers complete the Certificate III in Disability Work, which is a nationally recognised qualification. In the 2004-05 year to date 288 staff have undertaken induction and/or Certificate III training.
Following the completion of their Certificate III, staff access a range of refresher and mandatory training to ensure maintenance of skills. These are linked with legislative, policy and job requirements eg first aid and health, fire safety, code of conduct, challenging behaviour and a range of workplace, health and safety initiatives. Staff may also undertake training around the specific needs of the clients they support. Frequency of attendance is prescribed by the particular legislative or policy requirements and the needs of individual clients. Records for 2004-05 indicate 2665 individual attendances this year at a range of training events.
Training is also provided to community and specialist services staff related to the needs of both specialist occupational groups such as speech therapists and staff engaged in delivering specific programs such as early childhood services or local area coordination. Training may be provided on an individual basis, eg attendance at a specialist conference, or through organised group events, eg communication systems for people with a disability. Induction training is provided for all new staff. In 2004-05, over 300 of the 400 community and specialist services staff will have attended at least one training event.
In addition to the above training, all staff have access to endorsed priority training and development programs delivered centrally as outlined below, or on an individual basis where a specific need for training is clearly linked to individual development plans.
