MR LAWLOR asked the Minister for Communities, Disability Services and Seniors (MR PITT)-
With reference to pages 2-11 of the Ministerial Portfolio Statement for his department within Future Developments which refers to five new Behavioural Support Teams - What needs do these teams meet?
ANSWER- These Intensive Behaviour Support Teams will provide a consistent statewide response to the needs of people with a disability with complex and challenging behaviour. The teams will offer a range of outputs that include both preventative and responsive models of support.
The teams will work with individuals, families, service providers and the community more broadly, to increase skills, build capacity and enhance the range of supports that are available to respond to the needs of people with a disability with complex and challenging behaviours.
The operations of the team will build on work currently being undertaken by Disability Services Queensland to support people with a disability, their families/carers, service providers and the community.
Other outcomes that are expected to be achieved by these intensive behaviour support teams include:
· supporting individuals to develop functional skills to replace challenging behaviours; · enhancing skills, knowledge and understanding of challenging behaviours for individuals, families, the disability service system and the community more broadly; · improved quality of life for people with a disability with complex and challenging behaviours; and · enhanced professional expertise of Disability Services Queensland in this complex area.
