MR LAWLOR asked the Minister for Employment, Training and Industrial Relations (MR BARTON)-
With reference to construction activity in Queensland which has experienced strong growth in recent years and it continues to grow at record levels - What initiative has been implemented to address the capacity of the inspectorate to ensure compliance on building and construction sites?

ANSWER-
To address the rapid and continuing growth in construction activity, Workplace Health and Safety Queensland developed a three pronged approach to prevent workplace injury and disease in this important industry sector:

  1. An additional 22 construction inspectors have been recruited and trained. These additional positions bring the total construction inspectorate to 54, which represents a 70% increase on the previous number.

The 54 construction inspectors are currently involved in coordinated state wide compliance campaigns involving mobile and tower cranes, construction housekeeping on building and construction sites, and working at heights on roofs in domestic house construction.

  2. The establishment of a construction strategy group to liaise with peak stake holders on industry wide workplace health and safety issues and coordinating state-wide compliance campaigns.

  3. Release the Queensland Workplace Health and Safety Construction Industry Action Plan 2004-07, which identifies the key workplace health and safety activities to be undertaken in Queensland's construction industry.
