In 2004-05, recurrent and non-recurrent funding of $6.772M will be provided to eight non-government sector organisations located in the Southport electorate. Although services may be based in this electorate, individuals receiving assistance from the services may reside across the Gold Coast region.
Many of the non-government funded disability services are located on the northern end of the Gold Coast with a particular concentration in the Southport area. Services receive a range of funding types including individualised funding and viability, emergency, respite and block funding.
In the 2003-04 Respite and Family Support Program, Gold Coast Family Support Group received $110,000 recurrent funding for the Orana respite facility to extend the operation of the service from 38 to 48 weeks per year. A component of this funding will also assist in providing much needed vacation care to families. This is a valuable service to the Gold Coast community and will assist many families. The service opened a new respite facility on 23 April 2004.
The 2004-05 Respite Enhancement round will commence shortly and existing respite services will be given the opportunity to apply. The 2004-05 Viability Funding round is currently in progress and the outcomes will be provided to applicants from 30 September 2004. Viability funding confirms the Government's commitment to assist non-government organisations experiencing viability problems. This will help to ensure that organisations continue to provide the much-needed support that people with a disability and their families are entitled to receive.
