Recent house fires were a tragic reminder for all Queenslanders to install smoke alarms, or check that their alarms were working properly.
Every year Queensland firefighters are called to domestic fires in which people have lost their lives.
This week a firefighter and a young boy were tragically killed in a house fire on the New South Wales central coast, and we have had a couple of house fires in Queensland in recent weeks as well.
The Queensland Fire and Rescue Service believes that with a properly fitted and working smoke alarm, a home evacuation plan and other basic fire safety measures in place, some of these deaths can be prevented.
Smoke alarms are the best defence against fire, giving people an early warning, which means more time to get out safely.
With smoke alarms available for as little as $15 each, there was no excuse for people not to invest in their safety and their family's safety.
Smoke alarms are particularly important as many fires occur at night and many people die without even knowing there is a fire.
During house fires, poisonous smoke and fumes fill the house long before the heat and flames spread, putting people into a deeper sleep rather than waking them up.
The recent fires also served as a reminder for Queenslanders to make sure they know the triple zero emergency phone number.
Every second counts during an emergency and time can mean the difference between life and death - that's why it's vital for people to know the triple zero emergency phone number and to use it properly.
If you call triple zero, you will get through to a Telstra operator who asks which town and state you are calling from and which service is required - fire, ambulance or police.
A caller should never hang up until instructed to do so by the call taker.
