Recipe for success for organic firms

Organic farmers and manufacturers throughout Queensland are set to capitalise on growing interest in natural foods thanks to State Government support.

Member for Southport Peter Lawlor said a grant of $41,000 was recently awarded to the Gold Coast-based Australian Organic Institute.

The institute increases sales for its members through joint marketing initiatives, sharing of information and support with certification and marketing.

Mr Lawlor said the grant would enable the compilation of a vital capability register for the industry.

"Once we have a complete register of all organic growers and manufacturers we'll be able to link them together and help them access resources, support and market opportunities," he said.

"These are all avenues of expansion that would have been near to impossible on their own."

Minister for State Development and Innovation Tony McGrady congratulated the organisation on its growth and plans for expansion.

He said this cluster approach - bringing like minded businesses together - was generating more opportunities and jobs in many industries across the State.

"Here we have all the ingredients for another Queensland Smart State success story," he said.

The Institute's Executive Officer Kay Allen said the grant would also enable its positive work for the industry to continue.

"In our first year we managed to link quite a number of organic producers with new buyers, to the envy of many other organic organisations throughout Australia," she said.

"As well as the registry, we're looking at training; at helping firms preparing to export for the first time and developing some joint marketing initiatives."
