Member for Broadwater Peta-Kaye Croft and Member for Southport Peter Lawlor represented Minister for Transport and Main Roads Paul Lucas today in opening a busy intersection to traffic.

The new-look intersection of Frank and Broad Streets in Labrador on the Gold Coast opened today after being redesigned, widened and signalized.

Acting Minister for Transport and Main Roads Tony McGrady said the traffic flow along Frank Street had become a problem with the increasing growth in the eastern Gold Coast area.

"Local residents will be pleased to know this road has finally been addressed," Mr McGrady said.

"Motorists had voiced repeated concerns about safety and congestion at this intersection and I'm delighted that the Beattie Government has responded.

"The Department of Main Roads started the work in December 2003 as the first step towards addressing the growing congestion problems and improving road safety and amenity in the Labrador area."

Member for Broadwater Peta-Kaye Croft said Main Roads had consulted extensively with the community before the intersection was redesigned, to find the best solution to the safety, congestion, parking and pedestrian access issues here.

"The majority of community members who gave feedback to the study wanted traffic lights at the intersection, so this is a terrific outcome for the community," Ms Croft said.

"The Beattie government-funded project included relocating utility services, widening the road pavement to provide protected turning lanes at the intersection and installing traffic signals.

"The key safety features for motorists are the controlled conditions when turning into Frank Street, dedicated right-turn lanes and signal-controlled left turns into Broad Street and Marine Parade."

Ms Croft said pedestrian crossing signals had also been relocated and would be provided on all four sides of the intersection - replacing the crossing signals which had been located a few meters north of the intersection.

"The lights will be an important step towards improving both the flow of traffic along Frank Street and the amenity and safety of the area for local residents," Ms Croft said.

"I'm delighted pedestrians and motorists alike will benefit from the improved arrangements."

Member for Southport Peter Lawlor welcomed the project and said it had been a collaborative effort involving a number of organisations.

"I'd like to thank Mr Geoffrey Smith and Mr Tom O'Neill, owners of the Grand Hotel at Marine Parade who kindly dedicated some of their land to allow the works to proceed," Mr Lawlor said.

"The relocation of services was jointly funded by Main Roads and Gold Coast City Council, with Energex contributing to the undergrounding of power.

"Roadtek did the construction work which was fully funded by the Department of Main Roads."

Mr Lawlor said further planning was underway as part of continuing measures to improve traffic flow along the Gold Coast Highway.

"The State Government and Gold Coast City Council are liaising closely. We have a joint working group chaired by Peta-Kaye Croft looking at options for a long-term solution for the whole length of Frank Street," Mr Lawlor said.

"The Beattie Government is committed to addressing traffic issues for the safety and enjoyment of residents and tourists.

"I'm very pleased this $1.4 million project is the first step in demonstrating our commitment here."
