Today's launch of a national 'Do Not Call Register' is a great win for Queenslanders, says Fair Trading Minister Margaret Keech. Mrs Keech said she was pleased to see the Federal Government had finally taken action on this important issue after dragging the chain for so long.
"Now that this national register has finally been put in place people can protect themselves against annoying calls from telemarketers," Mrs Keech said.
"Telemarketing calls are an enormous frustration for many people.
"Queenslanders will be very happy to know they can now put their home phone number and even their mobile numbers on the register to avoid a range of telemarketing calls.
"By putting your number on the register you can help minimise the number of calls you will get." With the register in place there are still some exemptions including: • charities; • educational or religious organisations; • registered political parties and independent members of parliament; • electoral candidates; and • government bodies.
Market researchs conducting surveys will also be permitted to call, however they must follow a national industry standard providing a minimum set of requirements for these calls.
Member for Southport Peter Lawlor said the register is a great initiative and people can still use other ways to reduce the number of calls they receive.
"A great way to reduce calls is to ask the callers who they represent, write down their contact details, and then ask firmly or make a written request to be taken off their calling list," Mr. Lawlor said.
"Another way to limit the calls is by taking extra caution when giving out personal details.
"While there's not much you can do to stop businesses calling from phone books and electoral rolls, you can limit the number of new lists your name is added to," Mr Lawlor said.
"I know how those calls can become annoying but please try to remember the people on the other end are just trying to do their job as well."
