Address by Peter Lawlor MP Member for Southport

Representing The Honourable John Mickel MP
Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations at Gold Coast City Council Rosser Park Botanical Gardens Structural Landscaping Project graduation on Tuesday November 14 2006 11.30 am

Acknowledgements

Councillor Susie Douglas and Peter Johnson - Co-ordinator Employment Schemes

It is a pleasure to be here today representing my Parliamentary colleague, Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations, John Mickel.

John sends his apologies for not being able to make it here personally and has asked me to wish all of today's graduates the best.

We are here to celebrate the graduation of the twelve people involved in the first stage of the redevelopment of this wonderful facility, the Rosser Park Botanical Gardens. These graduates have been responsible for starting the redevelopment of the site and along the way have developed a number of skills in construction and landscaping. Skills which they can now use to pursue employment or further training.

I understand a few of the participants have already secured jobs and I am sure it is only a matter of time before all of the graduates here are embarking on new, rewarding careers.

Even though this project was only the first step in a long development program for the park, the wider community is already benefiting from the work and effort you have all put in. The eventual aim is for the park to become an important feature for the Gold Coast community and each one of the graduates today should feel a great deal of pride in what they have started and what they achieved.

The project itself was funded under the State Government's Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative which forms part of the $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan. An important part of the Plan is ensuring all Queenslanders have the skills and ability to share in the current prosperity our state is experiencing.

In this case we have an excellent example of the Gold Coast City Council working closely with the Queensland Government to provide both skills to people and valuable community infrastructure. The project is one of four being run by the council with Government funding of $500,000 to help 40 unemployed people find work.

To date more than 113,000 jobseekers have been helped into employment through Skilling Queenslanders for Work and its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle.

Good luck to everyone about to embark on a new journey to employment, you should feel proud of your efforts they will be part of these gardens for future generations to enjoy.

Thank You.
