St Kevin's Catholic School at Benowa today celebrated the official opening of its new Prep classrooms built with State Government funding support.

Member for Southport Peter Lawlor said the Queensland Government had provided more than $506,000 towards the new facilities.

"The new Prep facilities offer the best possible learning environment for the school's youngest students," Mr Lawlor said.

"The new double classroom complex, which adjoins a refurbished preschool room, has increased the school's Prep capacity from 25 to 75.

"There are currently 64 Prep students at St Kevin's, with 75 enrolled for next year.

"A specially designed curriculum based on cutting-edge research, along with expert teachers and classrooms created just for Prep, will set these children on the path to lifelong learning.

"I congratulate the school and parish communities for their contribution of more than $68,000 to this project. This is a real investment in the children's future."

Mr Lawlor also commended the school for its nurturing environment and its focus on literacy.

"These skills will lay a good foundation for these students to meet the challenges of the 21st century," he said.

Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said St Kevin's Catholic Primary School was one of 1300 state and non-state schools which welcomed Prep students this year.

"This has been a landmark year for education in Queensland with the statewide introduction of Prep," Mr Welford said.

"The 2007-08 State Budget has allocated $392.5 million in recurrent funding and $49.4 million in capital assistance to non-state schools, to help build the necessary facilities.

"Our Government will continue to work to provide the very best learning opportunities for every young Queenslander."
