The Beattie Government will deliver a number of projects in the Southport electorate over the next two years as part of the $84 million Safer Roads Sooner road safety initiative to fix black spots and reduce the state's road toll.

Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor said today that Safer Roads Sooner applied revenue from speed cameras and red light cameras to fix black spots on Queensland roads.

Mr Lawlor announced that more than $1 million would be spent in Southport on the following projects:

New initiatives (Funded from net camera-detected offence revenue) -

  • $300,000 in 2006-07 to modify traffic signals, improve pavement and traffic safety on the Gold Coast Highway at the intersection of Pine Ridge Road and Captain Cook Drive. (Involves electorates of Broadwater and Southport.)
    - This intersection has a history of right-turn and rear-end crashes. In the last five years, there have been five hospitalisation and eight medical treatment crashes at this location.
Re-affirmed commitment (Funded from base Safer Roads Sooner Program) -
  • $715,000 over three years towards delineation/marking/signage between Helensvale and Arundel, on the Gold Coast Highway (Helensvale - Southport), at a total cost of $933,000. (Involves electorates of Broadwater, Gaven and Southport.)
More than 150 projects around Queensland will be undertaken through the new Safer Roads Sooner initiative.

"People don't like paying their speed camera and red light camera fines, but the price they pay goes towards making our roads safer," Mr Lawlor said.

"There has been a lot of criticism that the speed camera program is a revenue raiser.

"I'd be happy if no money was collected because if that was the case, it would mean our roads would be a lot safer."

$17 million in speed camera and red light camera fines a year will go towards Safer Roads Sooner and $50 million will come out of the Roads Implementation Program, an ongoing program of roadworks for Queensland.

Mr Lawlor said motorists could expect to see signage on roads indicating that the work is being funded by speed camera and red light camera revenue.

Based on data from 2003, an independent evaluation by Monash University revealed the estimated number of crashes prevented by speed cameras totalled 136 fatal crashes and 2,012 hospitalisation crashes.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Paul Lucas said Safer Roads Sooner was crucial to Queensland reaching its road safety strategy target of 5.6 fatalities per 100,000 people by 2011 - a reduction of 40% on Queensland's 2001 fatality rate.

"In February this year, the Beattie Government boosted the program from $25 million a year to $42 million a year over the next two years," Mr Lucas said.

"By the time we reach 2007, it will rise to $47 million a year and that'll be ongoing.

"The $47 million is five times the size of the federal government's current National Black Spot program of $8.9 million. The federal program will end in 2007/08 - ours is ongoing.

"Over the next five years, the Beattie Government's commitment to target road safety improvements will total $225 million.

"Our speed camera and red light camera program and other initiatives in the pipeline like the Young Drivers strategy are designed to save lives on our roads."
