Late night safety and security is a top priority for the Beattie Labor Government.
That's why a re-elected Beattie Government will boost security at the Gold Coast's busiest taxi ranks with marshals and security guards on Friday and Saturday nights and for special events.
Secure ranks will feature CCTV cameras, better lighting and safety barriers. Four will be established across the Coast at:
• Cavill Avenue, Surfer's Paradise • Orchid Avenue, Surfer's Paradise • Oasis Precinct, Broadbeach • Varsity Lakes Tavern, Burleigh Waters
If re-elected, the Beattie Government will also cut waiting times by encouraging more cabbies to drive at night with a $2 late night bonus between midnight and 5am.
This initiative is about making it safer for late night revellers and cab drivers. A trial in Brisbane showed that waiting times at ranks have been cut in half and people felt more secure knowing their rank was under surveillance and staffed with security guards.
The secure ranks build on the Beattie Government's strong record of helping late night revellers get home safely:
• All Gold Coast cabs are now fitted with state-of-the-art security cameras, which have halved the number of assaults and robberies in other jurisdictions
• An extra 35 taxi licences have been released for the Gold Coast to cut waiting times at taxi ranks - 20 of the licences are for people movers that can carry 6 people
• Route 700, now Australia's best all-night bus route, operates every 30 minutes along the Gold Coast Highway between Coolangatta and Southport, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
The Beattie Government wants people to be able to have a good time without worrying about how they will get home. With this initiative, passengers can feel safer knowing their taxi rank is staffed by security guards and under surveillance.
