Schools Out

School is out next week (December 14) for local Prep to Year 9 state school students, who will start their annual summer school holidays.

Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor, said they were the last of almost 480,000 Queensland state school students to begin their summer holidays.

"I would like to wish students a safe and happy holiday and thank teachers and school staff for contributing to a productive and successful school year," Mr Lawlor said.

"After a busy year, students, teachers and parents now have six weeks free of the daily school routine, and to prepare for the exciting opportunities of 2008.

"However, one area in which I encourage ongoing concentration during the holiday period is the protection of school property.

"I ask people to be the 'eyes and ears' of their local schools over the holidays. Their vigilance can help prevent damage to schools, which are essential facilities.

"People who notice suspicious activity around their local school should contact the School Watch hotline on 131788."

Year 12 students finished in mid-November, Year 10 and 11 students on November 30 and schools in western Queensland, Cape York and Torres Strait ended their year last week.

Acting Education and Training Minister Margaret Keech also wished students well over the school holidays.

"2007 has been a significant year for education in Queensland, as every school has introduced Prep," Mrs Keech said.

"Prep is now the first year of school in Queensland, replacing pre-school. Some 23,000 state Prep students finish their first year of full-time schooling tomorrow.

"State school students will return to school on Tuesday 29 January. State school teachers will return a little earlier to take part in professional development activities on 24-25 January."
