A school-based program to establish more positive behaviour for children affected by violence has received more than $300,000 in funding from the Queensland Government's Community Renewal program.
SUPA Kids teaches children about safety, positive and respectful relationships, anger management and how to better understand themselves and others.
Member for Southport Peter Lawlor said the project would support children from 5 to 13 years old in four state schools around Southport, Labrador and Varsity lakes.
"Two fully qualified children's counsellors will provide education and training to the whole school community around positive behaviour," he said.
"Overall, 3,224 students and their teachers will participate in half-hourly sessions each week, with up to 80 Grade 5 students benefiting from longer workshops run in smaller groups."
The project will help build a culture of respect, healthy values and non-violence. Counsellors will provide children with strategies to cope better with the challenges they face, learn to manage stress, make responsible decisions and solve problems.
Member for Broadwater Peta-Kaye Croft said the project was already running in Labrador and Oxenford State Schools.
"The program works towards making classrooms a better, happier, healthier place to be and improving the learning environment for all children," she said.
Member for Burleigh Ms Christine Smith further supported the project saying that the approach will help children to develop self-esteem and skills for positive relationships with family, peers and the wider community.
"The children's counsellors will use different methods to convey messages to students, including art, drama, role plays, videos, puppets, discussion groups, stories and books," she said.
The program, which runs from July 2008 to June 2009, is delivered by the Domestic Violence Prevention Centre in partnership with Education Queensland. The program is also supported by the Department of Child Safety and the Department of Communities.
Community Renewal is a Queensland Government initiative coordinated by the Department of Housing. Renewal activities in Labrador are delivered in partnership with local residents, the Gold Coast City Council and other government and non-government agencies.
Since 1998, the State Government, through its Community Renewal program, has invested more than $100.8 million in renewal communities around Queensland, including more than $2.9 million in the Gold Coast South area.
