Seniors Legal and Support Service

Questions On Notice >>

MR LAWLOR MP asked the Minister for Communities, Minister for Disability Services Queensland,
Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships, Minister for Seniors and Youth (MR PITT)-

Question:
With reference to page 1-26 of his Ministerial Portfolio Statement which refers to the establishment of the
Seniors Legal and Support Service-
Will he provide details of what this service is and what it will deliver to seniors in Queensland?

ANSWER:
The Queensland Government has responded to growing concern about elder abuse, by allocating
$1.9 million to pilot a Seniors Legal and Support Service in five Queensland centres including Brisbane,
Cairns, Hervey Bay, Toowoomba and Townsville.
The Seniors Legal and Support Service can help if seniors are experiencing, witnessing or concerned
about elder abuse. The Seniors Legal and Support Service cannot provide assistance in all areas of law.
The service does not include preparing wills, advice on real estate, financial or investment planning. If the
service is unable to assist, every effort will be made to refer them to an appropriate service.
The services are staffed by solicitors and social workers, who are able to assist seniors in resolving the
legal and social consequences of elder abuse and financial exploitation. Assistance includes legal
information and advice, short-term counselling, individual advocacy, some court support and community
education. The services are also key information and referral points, linking seniors with other advocacy,
consumer and support services.
Examples of assistance may include:
• obtaining domestic violence protection orders;
• support to re-locate to a place of safety;
• information on protective strategies to manage assets and prevent or stop financial abuse;
• advocacy on behalf of retirement village or aged rental accommodation residents subject to unfair
contract terms and conditions; and
• advice on appointing or revoking a Power of Attorney or recovery of property.
Additional information and contact details for the Seniors Legal and Support Service centres may be found
