Mr Peter Joseph LAWLOR asked the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice and Minister Assisting the Premier in Western Queensland (Mr Shine) -

QUESTION:
What services does the Department of Justice and Attorney-General provide to genealogical researchers in obtaining information from the historical births, deaths and marriages records?

ANSWER:
• In 2006-07 the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages received 2,964 requests for historical certificates relating to births, deaths and marriages between 1829-1890.

• Due to the popularity of these services and the growing interest in family histories, the registry is implementing a number of new services to complement the existing ones.

• One of the services that has already been implemented is an online historical index service on the Registry's website held within the JAG website. Family tree enthusiasts and historical researchers can search the index for births, deaths and marriages occurring from 1829-1914 and use that information to purchase a historical certificate.

• One of the major upcoming developments will be the creation of a genealogical research and transcription service, which will begin later this year.

• This new service will allow genealogical researchers to obtain specific information from the registry's historical records at a reduced cost. Whereas researchers have previously needed to purchase the official historical certificates at a cost of $26.00 to access the person's details. They will soon be able to access simple text-based transcripts for $15.00. Partial transcriptions with amounts of information will also be available at a lower price as part of the more user-friendly service.

• The genealogical transcription service is one of many improvements which the Registry is implementing to further expand its client services. In 2007-08 e-commerce activities will be implemented to enable the purchase of historical certificates online.
