The State Government today announced it would provide almost $50,000 towards upgraded facilities at The Kumbari Avenue School.

The funds are part of a total of over $4.7 million being provided for 33 projects under the Government's Smart Schools Subsidy Scheme, available in the 2008-09 financial year.

Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor, said the scheme supported the efforts of schools and parents' associations to develop new facilities.

"The subsidy program provides money to help local projects happen," Mr Lawlor said.

"The Kumbari Avenue School will receive $47,358 towards a new playground including a sandpit, swings, shade sails, concreting for wheelchair access and a trampoline.

"I want to congratulate the many parents and school staff who worked together to identify projects and put together submissions.

"A lot of hard work has occurred in the school community and our Government is pleased to assist with funds."

Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said the Smart Schools Subsidy Scheme encouraged teachers, parents and local organisations to work together to identify and plan facilities that benefit students and the local community.

"Sporting courts, multi-purpose centres and playground upgrades are among the projects planned in this round of the Smart Schools Subsidy Scheme," Mr Welford said.

"The maximum subsidy provided under the scheme is $500,000, although this can be increased for some projects in regional and remote areas."
