Smith Street Upgrade and 24-Hour T3 Transit Lanes Parklands Drive to Tate Street Commissioning
Monday 15 September 2008 at 3.00pm
• In 1999 Smith Street carried around 31,000 vehicles, and by 2006 over 40,000 motorists used this busy thoroughfare.
• Today, Smith Street carries an average 44,500 vehicles per day, and around 38,000 vehicles using the High Street intersection.
• Extra traffic congestion is experienced along this stretch of road as longer peak hour times are needed to service the three schools in the area.
• Community consultation was carried out during November and December 2005 to determine what level of bus priority would be best for Smith Street, as well as what hours the bus priority should operate.
• To gain maximum relief from traffic congestion, the T3 transit lanes were the preferred option, designed for vehicles carrying three or more people, and in operation at all times.
• In July 2006, some 5,000 local residents and businesses were updated on the outcome of the 2005 consultation.
• Construction of Stage 1 began in September 2006 and Stage 2 started soon after its completion in September 2007.
• It should also be recognised that in striving for the prize there is always unfortunately some inconvenience, and as such I would like to say 'thank you' to the local residents and businesses who have been impacted during construction of the upgrade.
• Their patience, understanding and co-operation have been greatly appreciated by all who have been directly involved in the Smith Street project.
• On that note, I am especially pleased to see Mr Col Garrett here today. Col is the former president of the Labrador Tennis Club. As some of you may know, land requirements for the new High Street signalised intersection unfortunately encroached upon the tennis club.
• I would like to commend and thank Mr Garrett for the manner and spirit in which he participated in the negotiations.
• I am happy to advise ongoing discussions are being held with the Gold Coast City Council and Southport State High School to create a tennis centre on the school's grounds to replace these facilities, and assure our guests here today that not only I, but Main Roads as well, will be watching this situation with interest.
• Today's commissioning is testament to the hard work of everyone involved in the Smith Street upgrade, particularly the team at Main Roads and RoadTek.
Thank you to all involved with this project Last changed: [PUBLISHED_DATE] at 9:53 AM
