Local member for Southport, Peter Lawlor, today visited the $36.15 million Broadwater Parklands project at Southport inspecting the beginning of works that will transform the foreshore into a recreational people place in time for Queensland's 150th Celebrations in 2009.
The Queensland Government has provided $18 million (an extra $2 million in this years budget) to the Gold Coast Council to bring the project to fruition, with funds drawn from the $100 million Queensland's 150th Celebrations Legacy Infrastructure Fund.
"I feel privileged to have the opportunity to participate in the start of this important and exciting project for the people of the Gold Coast," Mr Lawlor said.
"Rejuvenating existing parklands and improving recreational facilities for locals and tourist alike couldn't come at a better time considering Queensland will celebrate its 150th year next year.
"Reinstating the pier theatre originally built in 1927 and revitalizing the heritage listed Southport Bathing Pavilion built in 1934 are a fantastic way for us to appreciate the Gold Coast of yesteryear.
"Queenslanders have long had a love affair with Southport's waterfront and today it continues to be a centre of water sports, barbecues and other family-oriented recreational activities.
"This project will ensure that we are able to preserve for posterity our past as well as provide amenities that support community life in Southport today and for years to come."
Queensland's 150th Celebrations Legacy Infrastructure Fund was created specifically to develop projects that honour the State's history and heritage, while providing real and lasting benefits to the community.
