Ladies and Gentlemen

• I wish to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land where we are now meeting.

• I am delighted to be able to formally hand over these two Mercedes Sprinter 318 vehicles to the Southport Ambulance Station. I don't get to many opportunities to touch a Mercedes.

• Today's ceremony demonstrates the commitment of the Queensland Government to ensuring that top class emergency service facilities are available for the people of Queensland.

• It's an investment which will enable the station to more effectively meet the demands on its services to the Southport community and the Gold Coast.

• Rapid population growth in Queensland has meant that many ambulance stations have recorded a significant increase in demand for their services in recent years and Southport is no different.

• As the 2007-2008 financial year comes to an end, the Southport Ambulance Station has responded to more than 16,970 callouts.

• The two Ambulances I have the pleasure of handing over today cost more than $140,000 each and will assist QAS Southport staff to continue to deliver a high quality service to the community.

• While my official role today is to hand over these ambulances, I understand it is not only modern equipment and facilities that contribute to a high standard of service to the community.

• The dedication and professionalism of staff is a vital element in the equation and it's important to acknowledge all the staff at Southport Ambulance Station who contribute to the smooth operation of this facility.

• The staff at Southport are also supported by fellow QAS staff who work as part of a strategically placed within a network of stations on the Gold Coast - including Burleigh Heads, Coolangatta, Coral Gardens, Helensvale, Mudgeeraba, Nerang and Runaway Bay.

• I understand that ambulances from these stations are continuously coordinated relative to demand for service to provide the most optimal coverage and response times for the entire Gold Coast region.

• Of course, no station would run at such an efficient level if not for the support of the Local Ambulance Committee who dedicate time and resources to fundraising in an effort to better equip ambulance stations and I thank all members of that committee

• It's now my pleasure to formally hander over these two Mercedes Sprinter 318 vehicles to the Southport Ambulance Station.
