Southport will benefit from a record $8 billion boost over the next five years for Queensland roads, announced by the Roads Minister Paul Lucas.
The Member for Southport, Mr Peter Lawlor, said today the 2004-05 to 2008-09 Roads Implementation Program (RIP) boosted Queensland roads spending by a massive $2.1 billion or 36 per cent on last year.
"Local residents can expect to see a record number of graders and bitumen-laying machines building and upgrading roads, as a result of this record funding boost," Mr Lawlor said.
"The Beattie Government is already spending more per capita on roads than NSW, Victoria and Australian states overall - and this increase will increase our lead even more," he said. Projects in the Southport electorate over the next five years include:
Extra $12.6 million to accelerate a $15 million project to widen the Gold Coast Highway to four lanes between Robert and Stevens Streets, Labrador south of Frank Street, by 2006-07.
$999,000 towards a $4.5 million project for bus priority measures between the Gold Coast Highway and 4km west along Smith Street, on Smith Street Connection Road. (Funded as part of the Smart State Building Fund initiative).
$900,000 for asphalt resurfacing between Olsen Avenue and Kumbari Avenue, on Smith Street Connection Road, in 2005-06.
$681,000 construct an auxiliary lane between Southport and Burleigh Road, on Southport - Nerang Road, by 2005-06.
$993,000 towards a $4.5 million project for at-grade intersection improvements at Minnie Street, on Southport - Nerang Road.
$150,000 for at-grade intersection improvements at Parklands Drive, on Labrador - Carrara Road, in 2004-05.
$207,000 to complete concept planning for Frank Street, on the Gold Coast Highway (Helensvale - Southport), in 2004-05. (Involves electorates of Broadwater and Southport).
$600,000 for bridge and culvert repairs at various locations in Gold Coast City, in 2005-06. (Involves electorates of Burleigh, Robina, Southport and Surfers Paradise).
$429,000 towards a $4.149 million project for pavement overlay between Central Street and Melia Court, on Labrador - Carrara Road. (Involves electorates of Broadwater and Southport).
$549,000 towards a $3 million project for an at-grade intersection improvements at Central Street, on the Gold Coast Highway (Helensvale - Southport). (Involves electorates of Broadwater and Southport).
$363,000 to complete a $1.4 million project to rehabilite pavement between Melia Court and Parklands Drive, on Labrador - Carrara Road, in 2004-05. (Involves electorates of Broadwater and Southport).
$600,000 to commence a $900,000 project to delineate/mark/sign between Helensvale and Arundel, on the Gold Coast Highway (Helensvale - Southport). (Involves electorates of Broadwater, Gaven and Southport).
$200,000 for at-grade intersection improvements at Wardoo Street, on Southport - Nerang Road, in 2004-05. (A federally-funded Black Spot project). (Involves electorates of Southport and Surfers Paradise). Under the state government's Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme (TIDS), the following subsidies are provided for local government road projects over the next two years:
$100,000 in 2005-06 to provide Gold Coast bikeway linkages - various locations, at a total estimated cost of $280,000 (Gold Coast City Council contribution of $180,000). (Involves electorates of Broadwater, Burleigh, Currumbin, Robina, Southport and Surfers Paradise).
$75,000 in 2005-06 to upgrade traffic signals at Cougal Street and Nerang Street, Southport, at a total estimated cost of $150,000 (jointly funded with Gold Coast City Council).
$8,750 in 2005-06 to widen the Kumbari Avenue and Musgrave Avenue intersection, Southport, at a total estimated cost of $17,500 (jointly funded with Gold Coast City Council).
"I am very pleased that the Beattie Government is making this investment in local roads," Mr Lawlor said.
"The five-year RIP program will provide around 22,600 jobs statewide in road construction and roads-related industries.
