Two Southport community organisations have received $1610 in Queensland Government funding to enable young residents to celebrate in the greatly anticipated National Youth Week from 1-9 April.

The Minister for Communities, Disability Services and Seniors,Warren Pitt, said the grant was part of $72,000 funding that will assist 64 youth organisations around the state to stage a range of activities and events to celebrate the week.

The Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor, said Mr Pitt had advised him the funds had been provided to:

• Family Planning Queensland - $805
• Silver Bridle Action Group - $805

"These grants provide opportunities for young people to develop, plan, promote and participate in activities such as dance parties, fashion awards, art exhibitions, concerts, debates, sporting activities and workshops during the week," Mr Lawlor said.

"National Youth Week is Australia's biggest celebration of young people and it's important all young Queenslanders have an opportunity to promote their achievements and voice their opinions."

Mr Lawlor said the State Government was proud to support and celebrate National Youth Week because it gave young people an outlet to showcase their talents, participate in their communities, learn skills and have their say on issues.

"National Youth Week also gives young people the chance to influence decisions that may affect their lives and ensures they are recognised as valued and productive community members," he said.

National Youth Week 2006 is a joint Commonwealth, State and local government initiative,to highlight the efforts and contributions of young people.

The theme for this year is - celebrate and recognise the value of all young Australians to their community.
