Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor, today announced preliminary planning to get Community Renewal up and running in the local area was already well underway.
Mr Lawlor, who attended a high level meeting in Brisbane on Wednesday with the Minister for Public Works, Housing and Racing, Robert Schwarten, and the Community Renewal Director said he was very pleased with the way the program was progressing.
"Community Renewal is one of the great success stories of the Beattie Government," he said. "It builds community pride and safety and security, and it delivers advantages like job skills, education facilities and literacy programs.
"The Beattie government pioneered this program and it only succeeds because the people involved make decisions about their future and work with government at a local level."
Mr Lawlor said over the next few months the program would really take shape with Community Renewal staff dedicating a lot of time on the ground establishing relationships across all levels of government and with the community.
"Community Renewal staff will work closely with residents, State and Local Government as well as non government partners to develop local responses to improve neighbourhood amenity and services," he said.
"These local partnerships will help deliver infrastructure projects, social improvement programs and increased community services in Southport to address issues of concern such as unemployment, social disadvantage and better access to services."
Mr Lawlor said expanding Community Renewal was a re-election commitment of the Beattie Government with $75 million allocated over the next five years.
"I am very excited that we are already acting on this commitment and look forward to delivering new opportunities to the residents Southport," he said.
