A Southport computer whiz kid has been named a winner in a statewide school technology competition.

Member for Southport Peter Lawlor MP today congratulated Samuel Judd a Year 8 student from Southport State High School on being one of 30 winners in the 2004 Technology One Building Youth Technology Excellence (BYTE) Awards.

Mr Lawlor said the awards, sponsored by leading Australian IT company, Technology One, reward and showcase young talent in the area of information and communication technology.

"These awards recognise the innovative use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) by students, and highlight some of the cutting-edge practices that are being developed and used in Queensland state school classrooms," Mr Lawlor said.

"I am delighted that Samuel has been recognised and rewarded for his talents in this rapidly changing field.

"Samuel won his award in the ICTs and Middle School Students (Years 4-9) category for developing an informative website about the effects of chemicals on rainforests," he said.

More than 110 entries were received from students who developed projects that included animated movies, websites, 3D modelling, programming, magazine design, robotics, digital artwork and video editing.

Event sponsor Technology One also congratulated all winners in this year's awards.

Technology One's Executive Chairman Adrian Di Marco said he was pleased to see IT development and innovation being nurtured throughout Queensland's state schools.

"As one of the Smart State's IT success stories, Technology One is proud to support the development of IT skills within Queensland's schools," Mr Di Marco said.

"These students are the future of the Smart State, and I'm confident that our industry is in good hands judging by the standard of entries to this year's Technology One BYTE Awards," he said.

Mr Lawlor said the winning students would each receive an Apple iPod digital music player, valued at around $500.

Winning senior students from Years 10, 11 and 12 will also participate in a five-day program of industry visits in September to leading ICTs companies including Technology One, Apple Computers Australia, QANTM, the Queensland University of Queensland, Logan City's 101FM and the Defence Science and Technology Organisation, which is part of the Department of Defence.
