Sport and recreation activities in the Southport electorate have received a welcome boost with the latest round of local grants funded in today's State Budget.
Member for Southport Peter Lawlor said the Beattie Government was committed to helping more Queenslanders discover the many benefits of an active, healthy lifestyle.
Mr Lawlor said the Budget provided seven grants totalling $27,985 for local initiatives under the Club Development program administered by Sport and Recreation Queensland.
"The Southport Gymnastics Club will receive $4,000 to establish school-club links and the Gold Coast Pistol Club will receive $4,000 to conduct coach, first aid and range officer training to support pistol shooting at Southport," he said.
"The Gold Coast Athletics Club will receive $4,000 to accredit coaches and officials, the AFL Gold Coast Juniors will receive $4,000 to develop a strategic plan and the Labrador Sports Club will receive $4,000 to establish school-club links for hockey at Labrador.
"The Gold Coast Stingrays Australian Football Club will receive $4,000 to attend the Australian Football National Coaching Conference 2007 in Melbourne and the Southport Junior Australian Football Club will receive $3,985 to accredit coaches and officials and conduct first aid training."
Mr Lawlor said the Beattie Government provided more funding for sport and active recreation than any other state or territory government in Australia.
"Just last month, the Premier announced a number of new programs at the Obesity Summit to encourage increased physical activity and healthier nutrition," he said.
"This includes the Community Partnerships Program, which will provide $10 million over the next three years to help councils, schools, childcare centres, Indigenous organisations and other community groups establish their own obesity-busting programs at the local level."
Mr Lawlor said getting involved in sport and active recreation was one of the best ways to improve our quality of life, both physically and socially.
"These grants represent a significant investment in the wellbeing of our community and we believe it is money well spent," he said.
