Residents in the Southport electorate have been offered a healthier lifestyle through a sports funding package announced in today's Budget.
The Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor, said the Budget contained funding worth more than $34,000 for a range of local sports initiatives.
He said the grants had been provided under the Club Development Program administered by Sport and Recreation Queensland.
"Gold Coast Hockey will receive $4,000 to conduct a school-based hockey program at Southport," Mr Lawlor said.
"The Gold Coast Stingrays Australian Football Club will receive $4,000 to attend the AFL National Coaching Conference in Melbourne and the Gold Coast Athletics Club will receive $4,000 to provide education and training to coaches and officials.
"The Queensland Netball Association Golden South Branch will receive $4,000 to conduct a regional planning day for member organisations at Southport."
Mr Lawlor said the Queensland Sea Kayak Club would receive $3,936 to accredit coaches in sea skills and sea leaders training.
"The club has experienced rapid growth and this project will enable members to become trained as trip leaders," he said.
"The Labrador Sports Club will receive $3,830 to conduct skills sessions and enhance links with local schools, and the Gold Coast Over 35s Soccer Association will receive $3,700 to develop a five-year strategic plan.
"The Musgrave Sports Club will receive $3,700 to develop a strategic business plan for soccer at Labrador and the Gold Coast Runners Club will receive $2,864 to accredit athletics coaches."
Mr Lawlor said the Beattie Government was committed to helping more Queenslanders discover the benefits of lifelong participation in sport and active recreation from the grassroots to the elite level.
"In addition to supporting the development of quality facilities, the grants in the State Budget will help councils, clubs and other organisations develop the skills and services they need to improve participation opportunities for Queenslanders," he said.
Mr Lawlor said the Beattie Government provided more funding for sport and active recreation than any other state or territory government in Australia.
"These grants represent a significant investment in the wellbeing of our community," he said.
"Getting involved in sport and active recreation is one of the best ways to improve our quality of life, both physically and socially."
