Welcome /Introduction
Thank you very much for your warm welcome.
It's wonderful to see the Prep students here today at the official opening and blessing of the classrooms. I was particularly impressed with your singing.
Education and Training Minister Rod Welford isn't able to join us this morning, but he's asked me to pass on his best wishes to everyone.
I have very fond memories and a real connection with St. Kevins because my three children Ali, Jane and Phillip did all their primary schooling here. Beth Newlands who is here today was the foundation principle and my children have noting but happy memories of their time here. I'm sure it will be the same for these children. My eldest daughter Ali was in grade one when the school opened in 1979. She is now 33, living in London and has two little boys. I spoke to her last night and told her I was coming here today and from the background noise I think she wishes she was back here!
State Government Commitment
I am delighted to be with you today as Queensland celebrates World Teachers' Day - a time to say 'thank you' to our teachers.
I'm sure that the Prep students agree with me, that your three teachers Miss Burns, Miss Lawton and Miss Ogge are wonderful.
I'm pleased that the Queensland Government has been able to support St Kevin's Catholic Primary School's Prep program through a contribution of more than $500,000.
Your school is one of 1300 State and non-state schools which welcomed thousands of Prep students in this landmark year.
I'd like to recognise the significant financial input from the school and parish of more than $68,000 and the Parents and Friends Association for its contribution towards computers and printers, and sporting and playground upgrades.
Our Government is committed to helping the non-state sector.
The 2007-08 State Budget allocated $392.5 million in total recurrent funding and $49.4 million in capital assistance to non-state schools.
Conclusion
Today I'd like to recognise your 'great work' in the presentation of the three Prep areas and on your improvements to the school environment.
You obviously look after your beautiful natural environment. I remember the working B's with the P and F almost 30 years ago and back then Beth emphasised the presentation of the tress, not to easy with a growing school, and that why today the school is situated in a beautiful natural bushland setting.
The school's tree management plan ensures safety as you enjoy the lovely shady spots around your school.
Congratulations to all school staff, students and parents - including your very active Parents and Friends Association.
It's now my great pleasure to declare the school's new prep facilities officially open.
