The State Government has offered funding support to the Gold Coast City Council for a project to improve safety and reduce crime along the coast.
Local Government and Planning Minister Desley Boyle said $5000 will help pay for a security audit along the Gold Coast Oceanway corridor to identify and prioritise a security improvement program.
"The corridor includes the beachfront, parks, walkways and dunes running from the Southport Spit through to Coolangatta.
"It is one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world and is visited by thousands of people a year," Ms Boyle said.
Member for Burleigh, Christine Smith welcomed the offer of funding towards a security audit.
"It will be important work in terms of working out priorities for improving security.
"We know that commonsense measures, such as improved security lighting, not only reduces crime but also the fear of crime," Ms Smith said.
Member for Southport Peter Lawlor said: 'It is important that we keep this ocean corridor secure for residents and visitors alike."
Ms Boyle said: " The funding has been offered under the Security Improvement Program which is part of the State Government's crime prevention strategy.
"Gold Coast residents and visitors should be able to feel safe and the State Government provides funding to the Council to improve safety and security.
"Through the Security Improvement Program, councils can access a subsidy of up to 60% of the cost of security-improving infrastructure.
"Since 1998 the Queensland Government has provided the Gold Coast City Council with more than $45 milion in funding from the Local Government and Planning portfolio." Last changed: [PUBLISHED_DATE] at 2:52 PM
