State Government funding available for Seniors Week activities in Southport

Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor MP today encouraged local organisations to help make Seniors Week 2005 the best yet.

Mr Lawlor said the State Government was offering $100,000 in grants to organisations throughout the State for events to mark the annual celebration of older people in Queensland.

"As our population ages, Seniors Week will become even more important on our events calendar.

"I know of countless older people in the Southport electorate who make invaluable contributions to their communities.

"Seniors Week is a time we can appreciate and celebrate those contributions."

Mr Lawlor said funding had increased from $60,000 last year to $100,000 in 2005.

"Last year's theme was Ageing - Everybody's Doing It!, prompting a variety of events to be held all over the Gold Coast," Mr Lawlor said.

"We had tours conducted by an organisation at Arundel, a cultural informative social event staged at Ashmore and a photography competition held at Burleigh Heads.

"These were just some of the 140 individual events funded last year by the Beattie Government and with the substantial budget increase, I think we'll see even more events taking place this year.

"So I encourage local groups to start thinking about fun ways we can celebrate Seniors in our community and apply for State Government funding to make it happen."

Mr Lawlor said applications closed on March 14 and forms were available from the Department of Communities website (www.communities.qld.gov.au) or from regional offices of the Department of Communities.

"Applications can be made for small grants of between $300 and $1,000. Collaborative or joint projects, such as events that bring two or more remote or rural community groups together, may be allocated in excess of $1,000," Mr Lawlor said.
