A local organisation will harness the power of volunteers to help strengthen the Southport community and support families, children and young people at risk.
Member for Southport Peter Lawlor welcomed today's announcement by Minister for Communities Warren Pitt that the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Brisbane would receive $29,886 for its Family and Friends Parent Aide Program at Southport.
"The project aims to use volunteers to support and oversee visits by non-custodial parents, and to provide support to both parents in those situations," Mr Lawlor said.
Mr Lawlor said the program was one of seven throughout Queensland to share in State Government funding of $157,959 for innovative projects using volunteers to strengthen Queensland families and communities.
"This funding will allow agencies from the different specialty areas of volunteering and early intervention family support to collaboratively share expertise and knowledge," he said.
"Volunteering has always been a cornerstone of Australian life, but its contribution to social connectedness is being increasingly highlighted.
"Volunteering strengthens our social networks, increases our social capital and builds the capacity of our communities."
