The Beattie Government has allocated $3500 to projects in the Southport electorate to help prevent domestic and family violence, Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor said today.

Mr Lawlor said the funding would help promote community awareness through events and activities held during Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month in May.

"This funding is helping the community take a stand against domestic and family violence," Mr Lawlor said.

"It is about raising awareness of domestic and family violence and the destructive social and financial impact it has on us all."

Several events will be held throughout Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month in Southport, including the launch of the Purple Ribbon Campaign and Salons for Safety Project, "Healing the Heart and Soul" Day for existing clients and a Community Education Forum that will provide information and training to professionals and volunteers across the welfare sector.

Mr Lawlor said the Beattie Government had allocated almost $50,000 to 32 organisations throughout Queensland to help fund Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month events.

"This delivers on the State Government's commitment to significantly increase funding for these events from the allocation of $35,000 last year," Mr Lawlor said.

Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month will run from May 1 to 31 with the theme "There is no excuse for abuse".
