THE State Government had provided a total of more than $68,000 to local not-for-profit groups to help them fund various community-based projects, the Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor, announced today.

Mr Lawlor said the money had been awarded to five organisations under the latest round of the State Government's Gambling Community Benefit Fund.

"These funds could not have come at a better time for our local groups who will put the money to great use heading into 2004," Mr Lawlor said.

"They are unsung heroes and these grants will help them continue the great work they do for our community.

"Thousands of not-for-profit organisations look to the Gambling Community Benefit Fund for support and it is wonderful to see it helping our local area."

The local grant recipients are:

· Australian Volunteer Coast Guard - Southport $26,550

· Southport Domestic Violence Service $8,142

· Keebra Park State School Parents and Citizen's Assoc. $2,725

· Southport Rotary Youth Centre $5,088

· Transcord Community Transport Organisation $26,058

Mr Lawlor said since it began in 1994, the Gambling Community Benefit Fund has provided more than $220 Million towards 23,400 Queensland community and sporting projects.

He said the latest round of funding would provide more than $8.1 Million to 525 organisations across the State.

Grants are provided to Queensland not-for-profit community based organisations for a wide variety of purposes, such as to purchase office equipment or to replace or construct a playground at a school or kindergarten.
