FIVE local not-for-profit groups would share in a total of more than $46,000 in State Government grants to help them continue their great work in the community, the Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor, announced today.

Mr Lawlor said the State Government provided the grants under the latest round of the popular Gambling Community Benefit Fund.

He said the Fund, in its 10th year of supporting communities throughout Queensland, was an important funding source for not-for profit community and sporting organisations.

"These grants help a variety of local organisations that commit a substantial amount of time and effort to enhance the quality of life of many members in our community," Mr Lawlor said.

The Gambling Community Benefit Fund's September round will distribute more than $8.3 Million for 549 projects across Queensland.

Local grant recipients are:
· Alzheimer's Australia $30,000
· Australian Red Cross $ 1,245
· Musgrave Hill Community Children's Centre $ 9,454
· Southport Croquet Club $ 554
· Southport Rotary Youth Centre $ 4,980
Since it began in 1994, the Gambling Community Benefit Fund has provided more than $248 Million to not-for-profit organisations.

Over the past 10 years the Fund has provided significant benefits to Queensland communities by funding 25,145 projects, from employment and training programs to sport and recreation equipment and upgrades to community halls.

Benefits to communities include the improved safety of facilities, opportunities to learn new skills, better access to services and facilities, improved physical health and greater involvement in community activities.

Mr Lawlor said the fund was generated from a tax placed on Golden Casket lotteries, wagering, keno and gaming machines.
