Ten local organisations had received funds totalling $184,733 to help them enhance their good work and services in the local community, the Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor announced today.

Mr Lawlor said the State Government had awarded the grants under the latest round of the popular Gambling Community Benefit Fund.

He said the grants were an important source of funding for thousands of Queensland community and sporting groups.

"The grants benefit a variety of local organisations who commit substantial time and effort to enhance quality of life in the community," Mr Lawlor said.

"I am very pleased that the grant recipients in my electorate will be able to access the funds straight away to purchase their items or carry out their projects."

The March funding round for the Gambling Community Benefit Fund will distribute more than $8 million to 533 projects across Queensland.

Local grant recipients for the March round are:

• AFL Gold Coast Juniors Inc. - $15,000
• Gold Coast Housing Association Inc. - $20,000
• Kumbari Avenue School - Parents & Citizens Association - $30,000
• Labrador Sports Club Inc. - $4,406
• Migrant Centre Organisation Inc. - $27,542
• Multicultural Families Organisation Inc. - $21,762
• Playgroup Association of Queensland - Southport State School Playgroup - $3,918
• Schizophrenia Fellowship of South Queensland Inc. - Gold Coast Branch - $24,366
• Southport Pony & Hack Club Inc. - $20,000
• The Gold Coast Community Housing Association Inc. - $17,739

Since it kicked off in 1994, the Gambling Community Benefit Fund has granted over $264 Million to Queensland not-for-profit, community based organisations.

Over the 10 years the Fund has provided significant benefits to Queensland communities by funding 26,216 projects including training programs, new equipment, community development activities, vehicles and building upgrades.

Benefits to communities include the improved safety of facilities, opportunities to learn new skills, better access to services and facilities and greater involvement in community activities.

The Fund is generated from a tax placed on Golden Casket lotteries, wagering, keno and gaming machines.
