ESTIMATES COMMITTEE G PRE-HEARING QUESTION ON NOTICE ASKED ON 3 JULY 2006 GOVERNMENT No. 1
QUESTION:
I refer to 1-33 of the Ministerial Portfolio Statement. Can the Minister provide details of the level of success that is being experienced in the freshwater fish restocking program through the Stocked Impoundment Permit Scheme?
ANSWER:
The Stocked Impoundment Permit Scheme currently applies to 30 dams throughout regional Queensland, following the inclusion of Storm King Dam from 1 July 2006. The Scheme was originally introduced for 25 dams in July 2000 and an additional four dams were included in December 2002. The aim of the program is to further support the development of freshwater recreational fisheries in these areas. Most freshwater fish cannot reproduce in dams; therefore there is a need to regularly restock them with native fish. The Scheme has proven to be very effective in achieving this aim and has raised over $2.3 million dollars to improve the quality of freshwater recreational fishing. This funding has been distributed to community-based fish stocking groups to purchase fish fingerlings for stocking into the dams associated with the scheme, as well as other activities aimed at enhancing these local fisheries. Since its introduction in July 2000, funding from the Scheme has resulted in the release of more than 8.2 million native fish into the dams that are on the Scheme. The 2006 funding allocation of over $470,000 was distributed to stocking groups in June of this year. Annual financial summaries including a detailed breakdown of the number and species of fish stocked into each dam as a result of funding from the scheme is available on the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries' website at www2.dpi.qld.gov.au/fishweb/10054.html The Scheme provides access to quality recreational fishing opportunities for rural communities throughout Queensland. This has resulted in the development of supporting tourist infrastructure and provided significant economic benefits to local regional economies. Last changed: [PUBLISHED_DATE] at 12:18 PM
