A State Government grant of $168 530 will give 13 women skills for retuning to work as they organise the 2005 Gold Coast International Women's Day Festival State Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor, said today.
Mr Lawlor said the 16-week Breaking the Unemployment Cycle jobs plan and work placement project would give participants a stepping stone back into the workforce.
"The project will enable them to update their skills in computing and administration as they coordinate and promote this community festival held in March," Mr. Lawlor said.
"The festival is a popular annual event which has been supported by the Gold Coast through the Community Jobs Plan since 2000."
Mr. Lawlor said women were a target group for Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative because they often move in and out of the workforce, to raise families or for other reasons.
"It is a sad fact that women in paid work continue to be concentrated in a narrow band of industries and occupations," he said.
"There's no doubt that social barriers are falling, but women need to exploit the developing opportunities.
"When they reach a point in their lives where they want to return to work, they may find that their skills and confidence are lacking and that the workforce has changed markedly since they were last a part of it."
The project will be managed by the Southport-based Women Re-entry to Work Association.
Organisation Principal Josephine Tobias said the project would have a win-win outcome.
"The participants get skills to move back into a job, and the Gold Coast community and visitors get a memorable international-standard festival," she said.
Community Jobs Plan-Work Placement is a component of Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative, which has helped create more than 79 000 jobs for Queensland since 1998.
