Trade apprenticeships up for grabs

Member for Southport, Peter Lawlor today encouraged local school leavers to take up the opportunity to train with the state's construction and maintenance organisation, QBuild.

Mr Lawlor said in 2006 QBuild would offer 100 training positions throughout the state from full-time apprenticeships and school-based apprenticeships to construction and horticultural traineeships.

"I strongly encourage local young people to consider a trade training position with QBuild," he said.

"Apprenticeships are provided in a variety of trades including: carpentry; plumbing; fitting and turning; electrical mechanics; painting; refrigeration mechanics and stonemasonry.

"In the South Coast region five apprenticeships will be offered in carpentry and electrical and one school-based apprenticeship.

Mr Lawlor said more than 60 per cent of the total positions were being offered in regional Queensland, supporting skill development and job creation and ensuring we can meet regional construction requirements now and in the future.

"QBuild has maintained its commitment to trade training in the industry and is the single largest employer of building and construction industry apprentices in the state," he said.

"These apprentice positions will take the number of apprentices and construction trainees employed through QBuild to 850.

"QBuild apprentices gain experience in the maintenance of government buildings, including schools and public housing, as well as taking part in new building projects around their region."

Mr Lawlor said positions would be advertised in The Courier-Mail and major regional dailies on Saturday 19 November and applicants would need to lodge their forms by Friday 9 December.

Application forms will be available from the local QBuild office at Suite 31, Level 5, Town Square Offices, Robina Town Centre Drive, Robina Town Centre or online at: www.qbuild.qld.gov.au.
